Calligrapher by Dr.: Khalifa Al-Sheemy Islamic calligraphy, also known as Arabic calligraphy, is the artistic practice of handwriting, or calligraphy, and by extension, of bookmaking,[1] in the lands sharing a common Islamic cultural heritage. This art form is based on the Arabic script, which for a long time was used by all Muslims in their respective languages. They used it to represent God because they denied representing God with images.[2] Calligraphy is especially revered among Islamic arts since it was the primary means for the preservation of the Qur'an. Suspicion of figurative art as idolatrous led to calligraphy and abstract depictions becoming a major form of artistic expression in Islamic cultures, especially in religious contexts.[3] The work of calligraphers was collected and appreciated. Arabic, Persian and Ottoman Turkish calligraphy is associated with abstract arabesque motifs on the walls and ceilings of mosques as well as on the page. In this video, I do my best to explain the differences between some 'specialty nib' types. I cover italic and oblique nibs, as well as music and calligraphy nibs. Note that, although the example I give of a calligraphy nib is a type of italic, there are also oblique calligraphy nibs (the majority of modern dip nibs are obliques). I don't cover flex nibs: they are specialty nibs too, but I've already uploaded a couple of Noodler's flex vids in which I discuss these nibs, All of this is confusing stuff, so I hope this clears up some potential mysteries for new fountain pen users! |

Time to get Calligra-PHUNKY! Or not. Seriously, they wasted a perfectly good game by reducing the awesomeness of calligraphy to simply hitting the A button on the exact same beat 9 out of 10 times. Apparently someone on the development team must've agreed, because according to dummied out game files they'd planned on making a Rhythm Calligraphy 2, but apparently it got canned before they finished. Honestly, I don't think they could've done much more with this anyway. Even worse, this is one of the five remastered games that appear in Minna no Rhythm Tengoku, WHY? We couldn't have gotten Toss Boys or Space Dance instead? Ah, well, could've been worse. We could've gotten Quiz. |

Prepared in the form of ink sticks, sumi has to be diluted in water to create a black liquid. Until about 100 years ago, sumi was one of the most popular items sold at stationery stores. Today, ink sticks are rarely used in everyday life, but they are an essential aspect of traditional calligraphy. Shodo, the art of writing kanji characters with sumi ink, remains very popular. On this edition of Journeys in Japan, John Gathright travels to Suzuka, in Mie Prefecture, where sumi has been produced for centuries. He meets a traditional ink-stick master craftsman and discovers the vibrant art of calligraphy.
